Dress lowers maternal deaths in Geita

Dress lowers maternal deaths in Geita
In Summary:
– It is possible with very simple steps to lower the amount of maternal death.
– See also our article about an application for hospitals, nurses and doctors, and small urban clinics.
Geita District in Geita Region has drastically reduced the number of maternal deaths to only nine last year as opposed to 48 cases in 2012, thanks to, among others, special dress preventing excessive bleeding courtesy of the government and non-governmental organizations.
Geita District Reproductive Health Coordinator Felister Malima  said that 33 out of 35 pregnant women died at health centres last year because of excessive bleeding after delivery.
Ms Malima said this while addressing a health monitoring committee formed by a Mwanza-based non-governmental organization Tandabui Health Access Tanzania (THAT).
She told the committee that only three cases of maternal deaths were reported in the district in the first quarter of this year as compared  to 12  incidents in the same period last year thanks to the use of a special dress by expectant mothers to prevent excessive bleeding.  She said the special gown would tighten blood vessels and the womb of an excessive bleeding expectant mother before she is referred to a health facility, and that it can hold the patient for 72 hours prior to reaching referral facilities.
Ifakara Health Institute has offered the district a total of 11 dresses which in the last six months alone have rescued 84 pregnant mothers who had experienced excessive bleeding after delivery, she said, adding that the magic gowns have also been sent to Katoro and Nzera health centres.
The Institute has also provided two mobile phones to each dispensary with maternity services, three mobile phones to each health centre and six mobile phones for the Geita district hospital.
“Lack of communication can be fatal. So improving communication for serving pregnant mothers is equally important,” she said.
She however attributed the success to THAT’s strategy of establishing monitoring committees in health care centres, saying it has bridged a gap between the service provider and consumers.
She said since shortage of health centres and staff have contributed to maternal deaths, the government recruited 130 new staff members, making the total number of 525 out of 700 service providers  needed in Geita district.
However, Geita is not alone in deserving a pet on the back for reducing maternal deaths.
Ilemela district has not recorded even a single death of a pregnant woman in the past two years, thanks to joint efforts by the government and stakeholders who provide health services.
The acting Ilemela district Reproductive Health Coordinator Hellen Kapwani told a health stakeholders’ meeting that her jurisdiction had ensured excess of maternal and child cards to all and at any time.
The district authorities send the cards to health centres and direct medical doctors/officers to stamp them before distributing  for maternal and child health services use, but the patients had been often forced to buy the cards. Two culprits were apprehended last year and were transferred to Buzuruga health center, for more scrutiny and an order to report to the Chief Medical Officer and the consequrnt Attendance Register.
She said they have formed a district team to improve services by visiting all health centres every month and provide clients with maternal and child cards.
The team also holds sessions  with service providers and writes a report to the District Council Health Services Management team, otherwise keep suggestion boxes at all health facilities in the District.
She said another strategy is to ensure that all facilities that provide health services in the district provide delivery services in accordance with the number of health staff available and that the services have to be offered for 24 hours.

UK Schoolgirl ‘paralysed by energy drink’ is told one more bottle could ‘kill her’ as mum warns other parents over dangers
A gifted schoolgirl who had stroke-like symptoms and collapsed during class was told drinking caffeine packed energy drinks were responsible for her sudden illness. A high school girl who drank energy drinks bought from the ice cream van parked outside her school was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after suffering from stroke-like symptons.
Now Catlin Fraser has been warned by doctors not to drink anymore of her favourite energy drinks – because she could have a heart attack.
The 13-year-old who is a top student at Coatbridge High School in North Lanarkshire – collapsed in the classroom when the right hand side of her body stopped working.
She had been sent on an errand by her teacher – and began to feel unwell with the right hand side of her face “going numb.”
Minutes later the brave youngster started to notice her hands were “going blue” and that the right hand side of her body had stopped working.
Quick thinking teachers immediately called an ambulance as well as her dad Tam who owns local firm Fraser Haulage and mum Laura, and she was rushed to hospital with fears she had a stroke.
The teen and many of her fellow students regularly buy a 50p drink called Emerge from the ice cream van that is parked outside of her school.
Now it can be revealed that talented dancer Caitlin had too much caffeine in her body due to a build up of the drug in her system – and that she suffered from a rare Hemiplegic Migraine.
Symptoms of the condition include paralysis on only half of the body, motor weakness, visual disturbances, sensory disruptions and speech disturbance.
She said: “The right side of my face dropped and I was wondering what was going on then two minutes later my full right side had dropped and I had no sensation down my right side.
“I was really scared, my friends then told the teacher who went and got a first aider and the school contacted my mum and dad and then phoned an ambulance.
“When the ambulance arrived I was rushed to Monklands Hospital and was seen straight away.
“I was given a CT scan, an ECG, I had my blood tested and a chest X-ray.
“Later that afternoon, I was transferred in an ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital, I had no idea what was happening and was very worried, I didn’t really know what to think.
“I had lots more tests and now I have been diagnosed with sporadic Hemiplegic Migraine.
“On my results it came back that it could have been too much caffeine.

Energy drink: Caitlin drank up to two bottles of this 50p Emerge every day
“I used to buy this drink Emerge every day at lunch from the ice cream van which is parked outside school and some shops in the street.
“The doctors and consultant said if I drink this again I could end up having a cardiac arrest.
“I just want to make people aware of what happened to me, yes it’s very rare, but it can happen to you.
“Please please try and cut down on these energy drinks as it is a very, very scary experience but I’m so glad I had my friends and family to help me through.”
Caitlin’s mum Laura Fraser says that shopkeepers should really reconsider selling these types of drinks to youngsters.
She says that many of the drinks like Red Bull and Emerge come with warnings that say pregnant women and children should not drink them – but that vendors take no notice and sell them to children anyway.
However, while she says that from now on she is banning her daughter from drinking caffeine packed drinks, that it’s impossible to know what children are drinking when they are not with them.
She added: “I am not saying that the drinks are entirely responsible but I do think that they are not for children.
“I know that hundreds of the kids at Caitlin’s school buy these drinks regularly, they are freely available and cheap and marketed to be colourful and energy packed.
“My preference would be for her to drink water – but what can you do? You can’t be with them 24-hours-a-day.
“It would be better for shops to put an age limit on selling these drinks to prevent young people from getting their hands on them.
“Caitlin was very lucky, she had no idea these were causing so much harm. When the teachers called me I was truly horrified, I thought she was having a stroke.
“She will never drink these drinks again because of what happened to her, but I wanted to warn other parents to urge their children to be careful. This could have been so much worse.”
Emerge is produced by the Cott Corporation at their packaging facility at Kegworth in Leicestershire.
Sold in Tesco, Netto, Asda, Poundland, Home Bargains, it competes in the highly sought after energy drinks market that includes Red Bull and Relentless.
However it is lower in price retailing in some cases at just 35p.

The cream cake is 60 square meters, and the current record for the world’s largest cream cake is 40 square meters. So I wonder if, the cream cake gets written into the Guinness Book of Records. It is certainly the hope for the man behind the making of the cream cake, baker Nikolaj Thomsen from Groes Café and bakery in Løgstør in Denmark.
– It has take quiet some time to get it ready. But it went easier than I had expected. I had some good help, explains Nicholas.
He set out to bake the cake, because the town of Løgstør recently celebrated its 500 year birthday. Baking the cream cake took about 100 hours of baking and especially putting together the layers, creams, jam, etc. took a long time. It took a total of 25 men to put it all together.

“Shopping List” to the world’s largest cake:
600 liters of cream
70 kg macaroons
3000 eggs
200 kg of icing sugar
100 kg of flour
100 kg of sugar
150 kg raspberry jam

The cake is the size of a two bedroom apartment and the baker himself estimates there is cream cake enough for about 15,000 people. Theres plenty for everyone, so everyone is welcome to come and get a piece.
The local tv-station TV2 Nord in Denmark was there when the cream cake was created. As you can see here:

A bar in Denmark is advertising for what for someone could be their dream job.
For the successful applicant will earn a salary of 3.000 USD to watch 20 hours’ of porn a week.
Provided with a computer, the ‘lucky’ candidate will also receive a mountain of DVDs, log-ins to various porn sites and a private space in the office to get to work.
The Hornsleth Bar, in Aarhus, who are hiring, say they have no fixed idea about what they’re looking for in their new employee.
But they have specified they should be ‘open-minded’ and ‘experienced’.
‘The response to the advert has been enormous,’ bar founder Kristian von Hornsleth told MailOnline.
‘Thousands have already responded on Facebook and email.
‘Of course, there are a lot of strange people who have applied for the job. But we have gotten some serious responses as well, and we will start interviewing them shortly.’
Of course, there are a lot of strange people who have applied for the job. But we have gotten some serious responses as well. Says Kristian von Hornsleth, co-founder of the Hornsleth Bar in Aarhus
The chosen applicant will be given the job title ‘Porn Jay’ or PJ – like a DJ – and will work for the rest of April and throughout May.
And all prospective applicants, who must be over 18, have to do is write an email explaining why they would be a better porn judge than anyone else.
But while the whole endeavour may just sound like a publicity stunt or a bizarre joke, Hornsleth bar insists it is taking the role very seriously.
‘We will find out who is serious and it will be a very interesting process to find the right man or woman for the job,’ continued Kristian.
‘It’s part of an art installation in our toilets. I’ve put up images of famous porn stars in the toilets and with visual art you also need some kind of audio piece to integrate everything.
I was once hiding in the women’s bathroom at a nightclub and I could not believe how dirtily they were talking. We are trying to mirror that image. Says Kristian von Hornsleth, co-founder of the Hornsleth Bar in Aarhus
‘We want to have at least 50-60 hours of audio from porn films. Basically sounds from the world of porn
‘But we don’t want the sound to be the same woman screaming all the time or for the audio to be looped, that’s why we need someone to watch as much porn as possible and edit the sound from the film.
‘As a DJ, one must mix an entire evening’s worth of audio files. There must be different sounds depending on the time and mood.
‘The whole point of the bar is to make anything free, including sexuality.’

Hornsleth is a self-branded ‘concept bar’ based both in Aarhus and in Copenhagen, and it’s supposed to offer its guests a light-hearted way to view art.
‘Art galleries are always boring,’ Kristian added. ‘You stand there drinking cheap white wine and feeling depressed.
‘We want to show art and party. We call it smarter drinking, drinking with a content so to speak.
‘An intellectual bar in some ways.’

While it may sound like an off-the-wall choice, the bar has proved to be extremely popular on the Danish nightlife scene.
The 750 square-metre club, which is adorned with graffiti and profanity-laced slogans, welcomes between 1,500 and 2,000 guests every weekend.
‘It’s quite uncommon for people to have sex inside the toilets, but it’s not something we take that seriously if they do,’ said Kristian.
‘The reason why I came up with this idea was that toilets at bars and nightclubs is the space where men and women talk truthfully to their friends.

‘We need someone with an open mind who knows what to look for in porn. They will be working as my assistant and update the sound regularly.
Provo artist bar new intern
Unusual: This is the advert Hornsleth Bar has used to hunt for its new employee which, unsurprisingly, has prompted thousands of applications – some more serious than others.
‘It could be a man or a woman, we don’t care about the gender, but it ought to be someone with creative ideas on how to make this great.
I work with art, and for me art can other than just things on the wall, it can be also be smells and sounds, and with our and on our beautiful toilets with clips from famous porn movies, i would like to have sound clips says Kristian von Hornsleth.
The one that gets the job have to show up to start the job watching porn, in end April, may, 2016 to chose the sound tracks from the porn movies that fits the pictures from famous porn stars. but we do not just want moaning women, but sounds that fits.

‘Perhaps the trauma is part of the job. But on the other hand, a doctor probably looks at naked people a lot during a work day, and for them that’s just a normal thing.
‘Why wouldn’t this also be the case for our PJ?’

The CBK boss said banks wishing to access the money will even have to go slow on lending and sell their foreign currency to raise capital.
The Central Bank has set tough conditions for the money it has offered to bail out banks facing liquidity pressures as a result of Chase Bank’s closure last week.
The interest-free cash, which will be extended for between seven days to four weeks, will only be given to banks facing pressures that are not of their making.
“This is not a loan, credit or a bailout. It is interest-free but CBK will be all over you if you are provided with this support,” the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge told journalists on Friday.
Banks will be required to present an action plan for getting out of their financial woes including re-establishing lines of credit with other lenders.
They will also be required to reorganise assets, consolidate their investments and even present proposals for raising more cash from debt, equity and shareholders.
The CBK boss said banks wishing to access the money will even have to go slow on lending and sell their foreign currency to raise capital.
After receiving the money, the banks will be forced to submit daily and weekly reports to the regulator and will be subject to targeted inspection “every so often”.
“They must come up with an action plan, this is not a tap or an ATM,” he said.
The CBK governor said the measure is a new way of dealing with situations such as the one that Chase Bank faced.
Dr Njoroge said some of the lenders, including the big ones, have approached him to understand how the funds will be issued.
He however did not disclose the number of banks which have applied for the cash or even the amount CBK had already disbursed.
The Central Bank has other tools to support banks including overnight lending, the discount window such as buying back securities from lenders to release money into the banking system through reverse repos transactions.
The governor said the framework will help banks which do not even have the securities to trade and are struggling for funding on the interbank market as a result of the Chase Bank contagion which may have seen financial institutions lend less to each other.
Last week, CBK also extended the window for reverse repos by increasing the time it will hold securities from banks from one week to a month

Iran’s “national women has eight men on the team

Iran’s “national women has eight men on the team
Iran’s national women’s football are in somewhat difficulties – because there might not be talking about a woman team!
The team has been accused of being partly composed of men. writes “The Berlingske”.
It was said to be about eight of the team’s players, according Mojtabi Sharifi, an official close to the Iranian league, that has the wrong gender to play in a women’s team.
Players “has played on the Iranian national women team without having completed sex change operations,” said Mojtabi Sharifi Wednesday in an interview with netmediet Young Journalists’ Club.
The media is founded by Iran’s official radio and television monopoly IRIB.
It is not known which of the national team players, Sharifi accused of cheating by sex, but it is not the first time there has been a suspicion that there is a little too much testosterone on the Iranian national women.
Both in 2010 and in 2014 the press wrote about the men on the team. Among others in the English media The Telegraph.
The interview with Mojtabi Sharifi has now led to the Iranian authorities ordering a gender test of the “woman” national team.
But how is it even possible that there may sneaking men into a national women?
Well. Despite a strict Sharia law, it is actually legal to change sex in the otherwise highly religious Iran (One wonder why, and it is similar in other very religious Muslim countries in the middle east).
Sex change operations performed over long periods – often up to a few years, writes “The Berlingske”, and that is why there can sneak men into a national women.
